Out of the Shadow Productions is proud to present In the Shadow of My Son as part of the 11th annual New York International Fringe Festival – FringeNYC. Regarded as “the Angels in America for postpartum depression,” In the Shadow of My Son shines a light on this taboo side of motherhood. The play will receive its New York City premiere at FringeNYC, which runs from August 10th until the 26th.
Drawing on the experiences of three mothers who underwent postpartum depression, In the Shadow of My Son weaves a rich tapestry of excerpts from interviews and personal essays to tell a riveting, empowering story. Using five actresses, a theme of boxes, and children’s items as props, it enlightens audiences while reminding us how universal this transition to motherhood – with all its messy thoughts and emotions – really is. Integrating broader cultural views on motherhood, it also serves to affirm the vital concept of community as a force for acceptance and support. This ninety minute production uses monologues, ensemble scenes, movement, and masks to convey the sense of lost self, lost power, and shame that these women experience – leavened with humor and messages of hope.
In the Shadow of My Son features New York based actors, Nadine Bernard, Alexandra Gilman, Nancy Kelly, and Brooke Lucas. Ms. Bernard also wrote and adapted In the Shadow of My Son. The play is directed by Ms. Bernard and Ms. Kelly.
In the Shadow of My Son has received an overwhelming response from audiences across the USA and in Canada. The show has garnered attention and earned high praises from numerous individuals and organizations, including Postpartum Support International, the Former First Lady of New Jersey Mary Jo Codey, the Postpartum Resource Center of New York, St. Barnabas Medical Center, the Tucson Postpartum Depression Coalition and the Mayor of Tucson Arizona, the New Jersey Maternal-Child Health Consortium, among others. Obie award-winning playwright Amlin Gray, writes that In the Shadow of My Son “is a necessary work… that can change [people’s] minds.” Susan Dowd Stone, President of Postpartum Support International, says,” We were all filled with emotion watching those characters tell their stories. The production is well-constructed, cast, and the time just flew. We were enthralled… I am honored to support this exceptional work.”
