More Pressure to Fail?

ABC news reports that NYC hospitals have banned all infant formula from the take-home gift packs for new moms, hoping to encourage breastfeeding. Other hospitals have also taken this step in order to promote breastfeeding.

The debate continues…

Formula is expensive.
Breastfeeding is good for baby.
Some women feel pressured into breastfeeding.
Some women feel pressured into bottlefeeding.

Some women have postpartum depression and may be faced with the seemingly impossible task of balancing what is good for her versus good for her baby.

I have my own strong opinions on this subject.

  1. While breastfeeding is a wonderful option for many mothers, this approach to “encouraging” breastfeeding sends a condescending and hurtful message to those mothers who can not, or for their own private reasons, choose not to breastfeed.
