A Developing Option for Treatment of Postpartum Depression

Ruta Nonacs, author of the fabulous, “A Deeper Shade of Blue” has highlighted new research in the area of estrogen therapy for the treatment of postpartum depression. The indication for estrogen is the significant drop in the levels of this hormone following childbirth. The use of estrogen supplementation demonstrated some success in relieving depressive symptoms but is still in the empirical stage.

Nonacs reminds us that antidepressants are still the most preferred medical option for the treatment of postpartum depression. Estrogen is being considered mainly for cases which prove resistant to current interventions.
