A new study Prenatal Support, Postpartum Support and Postpartum Depression (September 2009) set out to study the relationship between support and postpartum depression.
Results are not surprising but offer further substantiation for what we have known:
“Lower or lack of social support is a risk factor for PPD. The Association between postnatal social support and PPD is much stronger than that of prenatal social support.”
Clinician Note: Do not underestimate the impact that social support has on a woman’s well-being during the postpartum period. Efforts should be made to reinforce all available support resources.
