Pregnancy Loss and Environment

In the American Journal of Human Biology, a recent study explored the notion that environmental factors can influence early pregnancy loss challenging the previous belief that it is largely a result of genetic factors.

The research studied women in a non-industrialized setting and demonstrated a relationship between economics and pregnancy loss with reference to healthy food, adequate working conditions and social support. Virginia J. Vitzthum is the lead scientist at Indiana University’s Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction, who has merged the biologic and cultural factors in this important work.
