I thought some of you might relate to this poem.
It was written years ago by the sister of an old friend of mine, a prolific poet. Valerie and I originally found the poem, titled “Postpartum” when we first published “This Isn’t What I Expected” and used an excerpt from it as one of our chapter introductions. When we were seeking permission for the updated second edition, I ran across the poem in its entirety.
It elicits powerful emotions and may be a trigger for some who read it. But it is a poignant reflection of profound despair that can accompany motherhood. It hard to read, but it mirrors thoughts that run through the minds of many exhausted or symptomatic moms.
Written by Jane Schapiro, from her book, Tapping This Stone.
