Introduction to Karen Kleiman's Art of Holding Perinatal Distress

Taught by Rachel Brabec, MS, LIMHP Today an abundance of training opportunities exist for healthcare professionals seeking to specialize in the identification and treatment of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. Karen Kleiman’s Art of Holding is a clinical approach rooted in psychoanalytic theory that integrates cognitive behavioral and mindfulness tools for relief from perinatal distress. This course provides training in the basic tenets of the Holding Paradigm and instruction on how to integrate skills for The Six Holding Points into any form of maternal care practice. Learning Objectives: *Explain how therapy with perinatal clients differs from therapy with clients experiencing other adjustments and transitions. *Identify one way the Art of Holding Perinatal Women in Distress approach differs from other therapeutic interventions. *Distinguish between symptoms of acute perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (e.g., unwanted intrusive thoughts) and perinatal emergencies (e.g., suicidal ideation). *Explain the relevance of a perinatal client's personal or family history of bipolar disorder or psychosis and how that impacts intervention. *Describe how the clinical course of perinatal distress differs from the clinical course of depression unrelated to childbirth. *Implement use of Holding Points to deepen therapeutic alliance. *Demonstrate how Holding Points help clients identify and overcome resistance while facilitating therapeutic engagement. The Postpartum Stress Center, LLC has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 7461. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified.
