MOM RAGE with Tanya Cotler, PhD Learn to understand, hold and repair the complexity of anger in the perinatal population. Anger is a common and unsettling feature in perinatal distress that is often overlooked and misunderstood. Understanding anger, and its link to the loss of agency and sense of helplessness for the postpartum woman is a critical part of perinatal treatment. Perinatal therapists need to be equipped to work compassionately with anger in order to help the mother to deescalate to prevent harm to self or child. Anger left untreated can exacerbate associated symptoms of perinatal distress such as anxiety and guilt. It is incumbent that therapists meet their patients with compassion and anchor into the powerlessness at the heart of the experience of anger as well as the mismatch between expectations and reality. At the same time, therapists need to be equipped to help their perinatal clients minimize their anger outbursts, and repair in order to ensure safety and positive developmental outcomes. Learning Objectives: 1. Participants will be introduced to the diagnostic profile of perinatal distress and the role of anger in the common symptom profile of those diagnoses with postpartum depression, anxiety or OCD as well as postpartum PTSD 2. Participants will learn how to help clients identify their primary triggers to anger, and understand the connection between agency and anger as well as reawakened wounds around helplessness 3. Participants will discuss empirically supported somatic and nervous system regulation techniques to be used before, during and after the rise and fall of an anger rage 4. Participants will be invited to discuss relevant case material A virtual, live and interactive course via Zoom. 1.5 CE hrs The Postpartum Stress Center, LLC has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 7461.
